DBX Expanders (single vs double rack space 3bx) and modifications

(Ask Vince)

Q) What is different about the dbx 3bx pro... is it the ds series?

A) DBX expanders are all conceptually the same. User controlled capability of creating more dynamics and lessening the noise floor (of vinyl and tape) by "expanding" the music's dynamic range, leaving the noise floor further down in level. Old 3bx, big knobs and LED's in 2 rack space box, are discreet circuit 3 bands of VCA to separately improve bass, middle and treble ranges. The nature of this VCA design does impart a very slight "tube-a-phonic" character, possibly veiled by dynamic sound character, maybe considered "warmer" in audiophile parlance. Single rack 3bx have improved IC, VCA's which theoretically should sound better but do give the impression of a slight "edginess" and must be adjusted more carefully. Don't get me wrong both units are worth their weight in gold. My assessments are not a criticism but a critique. I've used both versions throughout my career. I presently use an older 3bx because of the ability to modify and add 3 controls to control compression or expansion ratio continuously on 3 bands of dynamic EQ. Some records simply sound better with less midrange enhancement and more bass expansion ratio (improvement). A behringer DEQ-2496 can do some similar tricks. Read website article about DEQ-2496. DBX units available presently call if interested (617)926-8020.
