JVC RX-550V and similar receivers of this era

Q) How many watts is the JVC RX 550 V?

A) About 40 to 50 watts of average power. The amplifier is infact designed like Adcom or other real HiFi amps. I have sold a lot of JVC product. It is a very reliable era of product, but it is important to get low use machines so that buttons and switches are nice. Our product is clean and has low use time. That is why we call it in #9 or #8 condition. These amplifiers were simple "high current" amplifiers, and unlike modern "voltage drive" amps which claim bigger wattage. These modern units can sound weaker in bass because they can't really put full power into a dynamic (speaker) load. Infact different speakers really determine how much wattage can be pulled from the amp anyhow. 50 watts is plenty for most bookshelf speakers. The JVC's are surviving because quality of connectors and circuitry parts were top quality. Yamaha and older Marantz have my similar approval and commentary.
