While these are cool looking and functional units, they often suffer from cheap controls (same as Mackie boards actually) which become very intermittent or inaccurate at extreme settings. So if you need this for serious use, I would recommend something more reliably built. Try the Rane PE series, Tascam PE40, or Orban, which are all better. Modern EQs are done well by Behringer, ART, and dbx. They are all similar to the Symetrix but retail for less.

This is not the original CK12 capsule. In fact I avoid those unless the mic is in perfect condition, because I find most have now aged out of spec. As the gold flaking on these mylars ages, the element becomes deformed and the mic gets noisier. The element is also unable to carry the extreme high and low ends of the spectrum, making for a very midrange limited sound (although a lot of people describe this as “warm or thick”). They all seem to be a bit different too, due to wear (heat, stress, accumulation of spit, smoke, etc. ) which causes many different opinions in the studio. Strange truth is the original CK12 is a Beyer design and early elements were supplied by Beyer. In fact, you can get a real CK12 in a Beyer 740N (now out of production and increasing in value).

"I like these machines but I persue them with some hesitation now because I find so many in such poor condition as to make servicing unviable. If I were to resell a properly serviced machine it would cost $300 now. To be honest though, there have been breakthroughs in technology whereby the new effects units by Behringer, Zoom, and Electro Harmonix all do these same tricks with better, more reliable performance (and they are cheaper!) I personally use the Behringer EM600 echo machine which can even emulate tape echoes but with a quieter noisefloor, better bandwidth, and in stereo too (for $50)! If you are hellbent on staying old school, keep in mind I do still work on Effectrons and ADAs which are still $100 – 200. I understand that people like using these device for sentimental reasons so I am glad to help keep them running, but I must say that for functionality and use; better money is spent on the modern equipment. FYI: A common problem is that the grease on these machines becomes dry wiht time and freezes the pinch arm and tape lifter mechanism. Unfortunately, this requires a major take apart and removal of the auto-stop switches, capstan plate, etc. To oil the pivots. The pinch arm will feel practically welded to the axel and special cutting oils and heat are required to soften the grease and allow assembly to come apart. When they get like this they should really be worked on by an experienced tech.

Low, mid, and highs can be separately adjusted.

The 503 is simply the rack mount version of the original 3bx expander design with 2 variations of circuits. 1 version 3bx used all discreet circuit parts and actually can sound a little tube like with some harmonic "thickness" due to the VCA design. This is a very rare version. The later second version used a custom made dbx IC used in most vintage products. Both 3BX are known to sound robust in comparison to modern 3BX XDS which can sound a little forward and slightly bright.

Uniquely designed product with remarkable ability to reproduce string instruments, violins, cellos, etc. Overall vintage/warm WIDE midrange sound field. Original pleated hell type tweeters w/ matched pair EPI 4ohm woofers. Units have been upgraded, tuned, and phase improved for better, deeper bass, smoother integration of drivers, improved fidelity, and power handling.

The upgrade is not just recapping, but a better crossover design and correct cabinet dampening. These tweeters can be delicate; installing a "sharper" crossover to eliminate potential low frequency impulses which improves the reliability. The ESS speakers we have here were in storage for 20 years (possibly rep samples). Actually, we were considering becoming a dealer. Truth is, modern tweeters can have excellent midrange frequency power handling now. The ESS tweeter at one time had special capability to do low midrange well but with a slightly limited high frequency dispersion above 12 kHz. Certainly it is a better tweeter concept (pleated push/pull "accordion" ribbon) than an EMIT tweeter (high distortion, terrible dispersion, limited power out capability). Our updated speaker is voiced (corrected crossover) for more natural tonal balance, so that the lows, midranges, and highs all play out at equal levels.

3 band (low/mid/hi) compressor/expander in nice condition with wood sides. Original version with individual board modules for VCA! Modified with 3 band controls and ground mods (no input gain mods). Low noise spec. This is the early version unit preferred by audiophiles.

In addition to proper cleaning and calibration we replace any off spec parts (which will happen naturally on a 30 year old device). The modification I do adds 3 newly installed front panel controls which allow for full adjustment of expansion vs. Compression of each low, middle, and high band. Although the ins/outs are RCA, the 3BX has no trouble handling +14 dbm. This device is probably the only 3 band expander/compressor available on the market. On a mix, one could expand the highs to zip up the clarity and reduce noise, while compressing the bass end to add thickness. Adjustment controls for dynamic range, threshold also increase the versatility

The TNE is rackmount and in like new condition, but I only sell the Audio proz modified version. (This is a highly in demand piece that usually has a waiting list) This mod makes the unit work remarkably better. The same is with the 1201A, which is in a slightly worn condition, but certainly very acceptable. This unit also has a modification. See our listing # 60892I was the chief line tech and production assistant at Burwin research and even though my modification is simple and clever, it took a year to design. I myself was desperate for a better, wider applicable performance. The unit works better with many phono preamp cartridge combinations. I do prefer Stanton and Audio Technica cartridges because these guarantee honest bandwidth and correct stereo separation which is critical to best nick pop elimination. The Stanton 680 or 681EEE or AT 311 EP or 440ML is excellent. Indeed the ART phono preamp with proper cartridge loading switches and level control will optimize the TNE performance. I am on the side of laboratory standard ideals and not audio-“phoolish”, intentionally off RIAA standard preamp designs, which can be sometimes interesting sounding, but is usually just strange equalization tricks to impress the consumer. In my opinion its best to have an out board equalization to fix the many and varied equalization “opinions” existing on the stereo-mix of the record.
