Behringer EX1000 and Edison and Mods Available

2015-11-03 (Ask_Vince)

Q) What mods do you do to the Behringer EX1000 and Edison? What is the main differences between the ex1000 and ex1200? I used to own the ex1000 an am interested in getting one or the 1200. Thank you in advance for answering this.

A) I modify the EX1, to be honest I seldom see the EX1000 or 1200, but I must assume it's a similar machine with similar mod requirements. It's a good design except the LED and it's circuits which run them create RFI switch hash into the audio....Read Full Article

Behringer T1952 Tube Compressor Modification

2015-10-09 (Ask_Vince)

Q) Would opting for different tubes enhance the mods you make on the Behringer T1952 (Tube Compressor) and which tubes would you recommend?

A) Different tubes changing the sound? Yes and no. Yes a 12AT7 or AU7 would perform differently, but my research (after changing, modifying, listening, testing) shows that the circuit changes greatly over shadow any subtle changes by exchanging the tube and then recalibrating....Read Full Article

Behringer Truth Studio Monitors

2015-09-12 (Ask_Vince)

Q) Shielding is crappy. I hear radio all the time. Is there anything I can do to improve this?

A) It's not exactly the shielding. Some studios have troubles, some not. The problem is endemic to most powered monitors due to difficult ground, 120v ground loops and troublesome incorrect balanced cables and other situations between devices....Read Full Article

Bellari 282

2017-09-12 (Educational)

I have written this letter many times before, here it goes. Bellari 282 had two ways it could be releases to public and operated. One way is as a true volume gain limiter, as it looks at signal after the compressor circuit making the compressor gain ride it's own "Audio tracking level". This can really, make the audio squashed because the threshold control actually works like old school design. It advances CCW into low signal levels (which can over trigger the compressor) so be careful a little threshold is a lot here. Yes the unit does overreact, ...Read Full Article

Bellari MP 110 Modification

2015-07-01 (Ask_Vince)

Q) Hi there, I was wondering if you guys mod the single channel Bellari MP 110? If you do, how much? I would like to replace the OP AmP and the transformer. Which op amp and transformer would you put in there? Please let me know and thank you for your time.

A) We can modify the Bellari MP 110, but the specific mod you are asking for would not be something we would recommend. There would not be any obvious change in sound, and more than that changing the op amp could even make it worse. This is because ...Read Full Article

Beta Hi Fi Decks

2008-08-23 (Ask_Vince)

Q)I need to get one in order to transfer some tapes to a more accessible format (DVD). I am somewhat familiar with the Sony line and hoping to get an SL-HF900 only because I know it was a top of the line deck in the last run of machines.
1) Are there any servicing issues?
2) Are there other machines to consider? (I need HiFi)

A)Yes, these are rare to find and expensive if found. These machines break and when fixed, tend to break again, go out of alignment, etc. The need to do very careful servicing is crucial. This is a troublesome format with high maintenance requirements for surviving machines. Sanyo made a better machine but people were hypnotized by Sony. I have a Sony unit here that needs a clean up (probably $500). Virtually every machine will need the load up positioner modified or repaired as well as proper adjustment overall. Even then Beta tapes varied in quality of playback. ...Read Full Article

CAD (A Short Note Concerning our CAD e70 Microphones)

2012-09-12 (Update)

These CAD e70 microphones are simply amazing! Simply put, they will compete with any similar design on the market at any price. Vince has compared them at the test bench against the fanciest stuff out there, including Neumann and AKG. Since they are a higher output mic, the self noise can read slightly higher off the spec report, but the extra 4 to 6dB of output signal level easily makes up for this self noise. The e70 is a better mic with wider bandwidth and truly does 20Hz to 20kHz! It is a favorite for acoustic instruments, especially large body guitars, upright bass, and drums. The quality of low end definition is remarkable, picking up more pluck and deep thump of sonic impact than most vintage mics, which in fact have limited low frequency response. (Just read the manufacturers' specs data and it will be obvious that bass roll off occurs below 100Hz to 70Hz in most older mics.) Be aware that microphones which truly pick up such deep bass can also be more sensitive to room noise, rumble from street noise, etc. With this in mind, the e70 comes equipped with pads and roll-off switches to limit its sonic pickup to sound more similar to vintage mics if desired. We QC all these microphones on the bench and cherry pick only the very best....Read Full Article

Commentary on the Audibility of Electronic Upgrade Improvements With Respect to Speaker Capabilities

2015-01-01 (Educational)

I know that many people will debate me when I tell them that I have encountered far too many "supposed" esoteric, expensive, fancy cabinet design speakers and gimmicky speaker designs to be extremely lacking in regards to phase accuracy, or at least having reasonably wide frequency response or dynamic linearity to be accurate enough to honestly judge the "supposed" attributes of special capacitors, resistors, wire, or what-ever.

The simple and tragic view point I hold is that most speaker designs which use simple dynamic drivers (i.e. woofers and tweeters with voice coils and magnets.)...Read Full Article

Concerning "better" op amp substitutions

2015-08-23 (Educational)

It seems people are constantly asking about modifying machines by changing out op amps. Most recently on a TNE 7000 Noise Reduction unit which we do modify (see Services section) but not by changing out the op amps for more updated, better paper-rated versions. Ironically, "better" op amps will actually work worse in the circuit due to the need for correct DC offset and time phase, delay required at 4 stage all pass filter. In fact, the incorrect op amp running in the circuit will ruin the FET/switch of the high filter operation. What I am changing is the way and how the circuit can switch out the transients more inaudibly. This is done by installing precise calibratin trimmers and more clever filters at the FET switching. Also, a special circuit which gain rides the possible ticks so as not to fool the click suppression. I spent about 6 months picking the circuit apart to reduce the modification to about 8 parts. The modification is $140 plus the cost to return ship. I have done many of these mods and everyone has been impressed with the results. ...Read Full Article

Concerning APT preamp boards (a letter to a customer)

2015-04-27 (Educational)

The boards are adapted to as close of input impedance match as possible when ordered (and noted on website). Many boards 210, 201A 202 etc. are very similar but differ in subtle ways because M.C. cartridge designs (even same models) varied in performance, especially in low frequency "equalization" and output level. We at APT tried to keep up with this matter and attempted to calibrate each card to within +/- 1db at 50hz (lows) for specific cartridges, but it was getting too complicated when more different M.C. designs kept coming....Read Full Article
