| Reel to Reels (Repair) | Jan 1st, 2006 | We specialize in this type of product. However, we will be limited as to what types of manufacturers we will service. I prefer to do TEAC, Pioneer, Revox, some Sony, Otari, and AKAI. I prefer not to service Tandberg, Uher, and many European brands as they are usually very troublesome and parts are scarce.
It is better to call Vince directly but in general we charge $66 per hour for Reel to Reel service and the basic complete cleaning/ lubrication and calibration can easily be $100-$200 plus cost of parts, if the machine is in reasonable condition. Severely worn or moisture damaged machines which for some reason is common (people stuck them in the basement for years) cost significantly more to service. If there are complex problems and the unit cannot be cost effectively fixed, we charge a $44 to $88 fee-worst case scenario to estimate. Because of labor time required to dismantle and start basic maintenance and check for wear problems, we need to charge this fee. Occasionally, Reel to Reels, which are now mostly 20 to 30 years old will have hidden problems, capacitors which go bad or some sticky mechanical part which does not show up obviously on the first service attempt. It may be required a second look but, at that point, our service rate falls to $33 an hour to solve another problem. This is typical of “vintage” equipment and must be kept in mind. We do our best but old machines can hide problems. Reel to Reels are available to purchase from us which are in excellent condition and thoroughly serviced.
NOTE: Please don’t ever throw out the better types of Reel to Reels, they are valuable for parts and are resalable.
